According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, crude oil supplies rose by 5 million barrels last week. In addition, gasoline inventories rose 3.6 million barrels and distillates increased by 4 million barrels. All of the inventory increases were well above analyst expectations. A significant drop in demand levels was a factor in the supply figures. Crude oil was trading near the $100 dollar mark on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke met with Republican Senators to discuss the European Union sovereign debt crisis. According to GOP Senators, Bernanke indicated that the European debt crisis could significantly impact the American economy. The Euro fell below $1.30 in afternoon trading.

According to the Institute for Supply Management, national factory activity fell to the lowest level since July 2009. The index came in at 50.9 which was four points lower than economists had expected. The report sent stocks lower and the Dow Jones was down more than 100 points in mid-day trading.

A recent MarketWatch article on investing tips for alternative assets discussed viewpoints of money managers. Money managers at a MarketWatch conference stated that emerging markets will lead to further growth in commodities. The market demand for products will cause the demand for raw materials to increase and will drive up the cost of gold, silver and other materials.

Municipal bonds are facing proposals that would eliminate their tax exempt status. Republican Paul Ryan submitted a budget proposal that was aimed at lowering the deficit but also would end municpal bond tax exemption. It is not likely that municipal bonds will lose their tax exempt status because of the effect it would have on the issuers.

Exxon Mobil landed a deep-water drilling permit in the Gulf of Mexico. The permit will allow Exxon to drill in the Keathley Canyon Block 240 miles off the coast of Louisiana. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement started to issue permits again for deep water drilling. Currently, crude oil is over $100 a barrel and more drilling could help to ease market concerns.

Reports indicate that Nasdaq is close to making a bid for the New York Stock Exchange. Nasdaq may require financing of $5 billion in new debt for the transaction. The deal would make Nasdaq the leader in trading of U.S. stocks and could face antitrust review.

Copper continued to rise and is near $10,000 per metric ton. In recent trading on the London Metals Exchange, copper with a 3 month delivery date was trading at $9,860. Demand for copper has increased as the economic outlook has improved in America and China. Recently, stockpiles of copper have fallen for the first time since 2004.

Crude oil fell to as low as $51.29 a barrel after the International Energy Agency predicted a decline in oil demand. The Interantional Energy Agency expects a decline of 2.5 million barrels a day. Crude oil has increased 15% in 2009.

Hurricane Gustav may hit the gulf oil and natural gas harder than Katrina. Gustave is expected to be a category 4 or 5 when it hits the offshore oil installations this weekend. Evacuations have already begun and the return time for the facilities is not known.
